What Trystan Scott Means To Me: BROKEN PROMISES (Trystan Scott) by HM Ward

brokenpromises Wahoo! It’s almost Trystan time!

As you know, this character has his own series – THE SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT. It begins when he’s in high school and tells the story of a guy that has everything going against him.

This series was concluded in August 2013 with REVEALED. That was supposed to be the ending. Then people asked for more Trystan, so the timeline jumped three years and Trystan is in his early 20′s and is best friends with Jonathan (STRIPPED) and Bryan Ferro (PROPOSITION). Trystan also buts heads with Sean Ferro quite a bit in THE ARRANGEMENT.

But that wasn’t enough Trysan for you guys, so I announced the plans for BROKEN PROMISES.

Why did it take me two years to finish this book? Two reasons.

1. I thought you guys would get your Trystan fix in the Ferro books. I was wrong, which is nice, but it was also a surprise.

2. I wrote REVEALED, Trystan’s final book, when my uncle lost his fight with cancer. I’d written the first chapter, got the call that he had passed, and that book sat for weeks before I could finish it. And when I did, it was painful. I channeled that agony into Trystan, and managed to end his story in a way I was happy with. It was a Trystan ending, something specific to that character, as if he were real.

Two years passed and I tried to finish this follow up novel, and I didn’t realize it would open old wounds. Trystan Scott is tied to my Uncle’s life and death no matter which way I come at it. That’s good because it pours emotion into the book, but difficult because it’s pressing on scars that don’t really heal.

By the way, I’m not a public eye kind of person. I HATE talking about myself, but I’ve seen people saying I ‘forgot about Trystan.’ I wanted to let you know that I haven’t. Trystan is a struggle for me because he’s real. He’s forever tied to someone that I loved and I feel his loss every day.

I’ll probably delete this post because it’s way to personal. But I wanted to tell you guys what’s up. So there ya go.

Without further ah-do…

10 Completed Series by HM Ward

secretsnewcoverBN

Does she ever finish a series?!” That sentiment, or something like it, has been popping up more and more lately.  I’d like to say Psh, to that. Psht! As if! Over the course of two short years I have started and finished the series below.

That’s NINE NOVELS, just for the series below, that were written and completed in 2 years. Plus the novellas!

THIS blog and my facebook page are the only places to get real answers about things. Authors aren’t allowed to comment on the Kindle forums, so please know that I’m not ignoring you when you ask questions. Come over to the FB page and any thing you ask will be answered pretty quick.

Here is a list of completed series.

COMPLETED SERIES: (9 NOVELS + the novellas written since 2011)

  1. DAMAGED (novel, 340pgs, cliffhanger, 1 of 2 book series)
  2. DAMAGED 2 (novel, 325 pgs, no cliffhanger, 2 of 2 book series)
  3. SCANDALOUS (novel, 324 pgs no cliffhanger, was originally a stand alone)
  4. SCANDALOUS 2 (novel, 338 pgs, no cliffhanger, was added b/c of fan demand)
  5. SECRETS 1-5 (serials, cliff hangers, ea vol is ~20K-35K words or 130-190 pgs ea at trade paperback size)
  6. CHRISTMAS KISSES (stand alone novella – 132 pgs)
  7. A LITTLE CHRISTMAS ROMANCE (stand alone novella – 96 pgs)
  8. DEMON KISSED 1-5 (novels, length: 242-496 pgs each, 5 novel series, cliffhangers)
  9. STONE PRISON (novella, 78pgs, stand alone)
  10. THE SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT 1-5 (serials, cliffhangers, approx 130 trade paperback pages ea)
  11. THE WEDDING CONTRACT (stand alone novel, Ferro world – 306 pgs)
  12. SECOND CHANCES (stand alone novel, 316 pgs)

Many readers will enjoy a book, and go looking for another by the same author while waiting for the next release in the first series they picked up.  I often have a couple of active series going at a time, which can make it feel like everything that’s picked up leaves the readers waiting for something more.  That’s why I try to indicate completed series in the listings. Having multiple active series lets me continue writing while ideas still develop for another title. A traditional author may spend a year thinking and writing on a book. Instead of leaving that as dead time, I use it to write another book.

I know there are people who like to read series ONLY after everything is released, and that is wonderful. That is also the reason why the listings indicate if the book is part of a series, and how many there are. e.g. STRIPPED is 1 of 2.

As a general rule of thumb, H.M. Ward romance novels have 2 books per series, and 5 books per serial unless otherwise stated.

The exception to the rule is THE ARRANGEMENT. It does not have a firm number of books in the series because it is fan driven. That means the fans are dictating what happens to the story line (e.g. Should I leave in the dark sex scene in book 5?, Should Avery and Marty’s relationship change?, Should Sean propose?, What should happen to Mel?, etc.) Every decision the fans make alters the story and adds to it.

For people who like to know how many books the series will have, I can’t tell you yet. I do know that it’s winding down, but that’s all I know. It depends on what the fans ask for at this point. I strongly suggest NOT reading this series if you hate cliffhangers. The Arrangement series is the only series that I have that’s like this. It’s sold over a million copies and has at least half a million fans who LOVE the story and are dying for more.

Another common question is about release dates. Novels typically have a firm release dates, while serials do not. Why is that? It’s so that the serials get into your hands faster. If I set a publication date, I have to stall the release for as long as several weeks, which would suck. So I don’t do that. I release serials as soon as they’re finished, which is generally every 3-4 weeks.

On average, I’ve released a new book every 2.5 weeks this year.

RELEASE INFO! Last Monday A LITTLE CHRISTMAS ROMANCE was released. This upcoming Monday THE PROPOSITION 1 will come out. The following Monday will be THE ARRANGEMENT 12. Then, I’ll drop.

That’ll be 45 books written and published in 2 years.

Follow this link to read more about THE ARRANGEMENT series and fan driven serials.

Novel Peeps and Serial Peeps, Check This Out!

Hey Guys! Since THE ARRANGEMENT series has a truckload of new fans, I wanted to post a reminder that I write books for people who  novels, and for people who  serials. Both groups have gravitated toward the ARRANGEMENT series, which is incredible.

Novel peeps, your books are coming but they obviously take longer. STRIPPED, DAMAGED, DAMAGED 2, SCANDALOUS, and SCANDALOUS 2 were all written for the novel lovers.

TRYSTAN SCOTT, SECRETS, and ARRANGEMENT were written for the serial peeps. Just pointing out that there are two groups of fans that want different things.

And since the novel lovers have been asking for more Ferro family novels, there will be more. In the mean time, try not to eat the serial people for loving short books.

I posted this in facebook yesterday and here are some of the replies:

“Love.. love… love …. totally loved them..they are my favs .. And pls keep them
coming” -Sharifa Jan-Silva

“I’m a fan of both! Everything you write rocks!” -Kelly Gunter Atlas

“Love them all  absolute fav characters are Sean & Trystan.” -Samantha P.

“As I have read all your ferro brother books that are out I have to say don’t listen to the people saying to end the arrangement. I love it and I’m more of a novel reader but I like the serials simply because they come out faster and they are awesome. You’re an amazing writer. Till your next novel/serial comes out ill be waiting patiently and can’t wait.” -Kristalynn Jarvi

“I’m a novel lover, I hate when the serials stop suddenly, with that said, I love all your books. Once I stop, I can’t put them down.” -Sarah Mcmillan Dozor

Sean and Trystan, you say? Hmmmm. Should I mention that both men are in STRIPPED? ;)

No, you don’t have to read the serials to know what’s going on. Each series is stand alone, which means they can be read independently of one another. So novel peeps can stick to their novels, or not. Totally up to you. And serial peeps, don’t freak out. I’ll keep writing your serials with kickass cliffhangers. :)

Size Does Matter: Little Books are Getting Big Reactions!

I have to share this with you. Okay, some of you know that I started two new series: THE SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT and SECRETS. These two series are different than my other series because these books are shorter, about 200 pages in mass paperback size (4.5 x 6) or 100 pages in trade paperback size (5×8).  That’s not all that’s different about them.

Both series are books that have gotten TONS of awesome fan mail. Am I surprised? Yes. I did a twitter giveaway for these two series the other night and the “room” flooded with 100′s of people. Seriously. I’ve not had that happen before. It was nuts. And why? Because people are talking about these books.

Once in a while I get someone asking me why I made the books that size. It seems like a weird length. They aren’t short story size, but they aren’t big-fat-novel size either. There are a few reasons.

1. Both SECRETS and TRYSTAN SCOTT are concentrated Mature Young Adult/ New Adult books (yes, like kool-aide syrup before adding water). These aren’t written like other big novels that putter through a storyline, taking their time to get where they’re going. What does that mean? Well, take all the stuff you like about YA/ NA and multiply by 10. That’s what happens. You get a shot of pure young adult/ new adult. Instant gratification. No waiting for the story to get going. It’s the espresso of books.

2. Personally, as a reader, my time is important.  I’ve been looking for this kind of book, long enough to flesh stuff out, but short enough to risk my time on a new author. Actually, that’s how I found several of my favorite authors – by buying books this length and realizing how much I liked the author’s writing. This length book isn’t new. If you look at the romance section, you’ll see mass paperback size books selling for $5.99 a pop that are the same length. Harlequin has been doing this for a while and honestly, I like it. There’s a time for a 750 page novel and there’s time for something shorter.

3. Here’s what you guys are saying about it. The books are addicting. They’re a pleasure filled burst of Trystan or Cole, with all the bad boy hotness that readers love. Mari and Anna are interesting characters, flawed like real people, trying to figure things out. In short, readers formed an emotional connection with these characters. I think that’s partly due to the length of the story. If I only have 20K words to convince you to love Cole and Anna, I better make each word count.

Are all my books going to be mini novels? No. The VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE series are 350 page books (trade paperback size 5×8). You can see the newest release in that series in the pic above, CATALYST. People complain that book is too short too, even though it’s well within normal. Why do some books feel short and others don’t? Dude, it’s simple; a book feels short when you fall in love with the characters. It ends and you flip over your kindle wanting more. That’s a good thing.  Books always feel short when you’re sucked into the story, flipping pages as fast as you can.

Anyway, some of you wanted to know if everything is going to be one length from now on. The answer is no. I’m making the books the length they need to be to suit the story. BANE and CATALYST are about 65,000 words each. SECRETS and TRYSTAN SCOTT are between 20,000-25,000 words each, and told like tv episodes, with major stuff happening in each book. The fans have said they LOVE the shorter books for reading on the go, while working out, commuting, etc. where they don’t have a lot of time and need that junkie shot of happiness during their day. Who wouldn’t want that? And you don’t have to muddle through a 100 pages to get it. Each chapter has it’s own hoopla, romantic tension, and conflicts.

Thanks to everyone who sent me emails, facebook messages, and twitter posts telling me how much you enjoyed the mini novels. You guys totally rock! Have an awesome weekend!

BACKDRAFT: THE SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT #2

DESCRIPTION: “When Mari realizes that Trystan is the internet megastar, Day Jones, she can’t speak. Every time she listens to his song, it leaves her feeling so much. That song is bewitching. Everyone she knows heard it. As soon as it appeared on YouTube, it went viral, and then the guy who wrote it disappeared. Despite agents and record labels trying to lure Day5705 out, he remains anonymous. No one knows who Day Jones really is—except Mari.

To Trystan’s relief, Mari agrees to keep his secret.  Part of him regrets uploading the song, but when he sings to Mari the song that once brought him solace, it fills him joy. In a life like his, joy is fleeting and Trystan plans on grabbing hold whenever a shot at happiness appears. To his surprise, Mari doesn’t realize the song is about her. When Trystan tries to push her to see, he jeopardizes losing her entirely.

One misplaced kiss topples the fragile relationship, leaving Trystan reeling, trying to assemble the pieces and convincing Mari that she’s not just another conquest, even though everything he did—everything he said—makes it seem like she is. It isn’t until Mari decides that being the good girl isn’t working that things steam up. Trystan knows she wants to hook up with someone, and he doesn’t know if he should stop her. Every attempt he makes to win her over goes bad and pushes her further away.

As the world gets one day closer to tracking down Day Jones, Trystan is one day closer to graduation and leaving this life forever. If Mari doesn’t realize he loves her by then, she never will.”
